While a graduate student at Cambridge, I was once seated next to hm at the Jesus College Supervisors' Dinner. It was at the time when Sociology was newly 'accepted' at Cambridge and I think he was at first pleased to be next to a young, aspiring sociologist. Sadly, once I had explained what my PhD was about (very much one inspired by Lockwood and Goldthorpe), his interest in me waned fast!
